What do you see when you look in the mirror?

Updated: Nov 5, 2021

Everyone has an idea in their mind of who they are. But is that the same thing that is seen by others? When looking into the mirror, there is a reflection of your physical appearance. That reflection can be altered by the clothes you wear, the style of your hair, whether you smile or scowl, or any number of outward factors. So, in that way, you can project a particular image of yourself to those who see you.

Likewise, the way that you speak, and the way you carry yourself offers another image to others. Yet this is still just a projection, a character you play, not necessarily the true you.

Each of us must play certain roles, at school, at work, in the community. And each of those roles requires that we dress a certain way, speak a certain way, and behave a certain way. This is not being false to yourself, but rather is simply doing what is required to function within society. Yet, you need not give up who you are to do so. Follow those rules but do so as the real you. But first, you must figure out who that is.

The first step is to look within. You must seek the truth of who you are and what you believe. Introspection can be difficult, but it is necessary. Spend some time in a quiet place, close your eyes and think about who you are. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What kind of person am I?

  • Am I happy, sad, content, depressed, restless, kind, cruel?

  • What do I believe in? (Religion, family, friends, justice, equality)

Now, think about who you want to be.

  • What kind of person do I want to become?

  • What is my dream life? (Family, friends, relationship, home, career)

  • What do I want others to see?

  • How do I want to be remembered when I am gone?

These questions are not a complete list but serve to start an inner dialogue with yourself aimed at identifying who and where you are now, and where you want to be in the future.

The next step is the hardest. You must take action. Thinking and dreaming are important, but they are simply not enough. You must commit yourself to doing what is necessary to becoming the person you want to be. It can be intimidating, so just start small. Make a single change or do one thing that will move you towards your goal. Once that is done, you will gain satisfaction in your accomplishment and find it easier to take the next step. Continue moving forward and you will become the best version of yourself, and others will get to see the real you.
